Moving Distance (miles)

Weight: 0

Cubic Feet: 0

With over 20 years of experience working with movers we know that it can be a challenge to find out how much to budget for your next move. That's exactly why we created a free, no strings attached site to help you have an idea as to whether or not the moving quotes you are receiving make sense. We are currently heavily focused on U.S. based moves but most of the principles used by our cost model will work in other countries as well. Our model will evolve over time so we would love and appreciate any feedback that you get after generating an estimate from us.

NOTE: the goal of this tool is to just give you a general idea and also help you calculate your weight and cubic feet for your move. Moving quotes will vary based upon many factors that we cannot control but regardless the information we provide should be helpful to you.

There are many other costs associated with a move but related to the moving company costs, you can expect some insurance options as well which could run between 5 an 10 percent of the cost of the move depending upon how much coverage you feel you need. It's a good idea to check with your existing homeowners policy to see ii that is necessary or not.

How is this calculated?

We start with industry standard weights and cubit feet for each type of item and then multiply those times the quantity you provide. We then use an industry standard factor that is based upon the total weight and factor in the distance plus the fuel costs that normally will be charged by your moving company. We then determine the range of values which will vary between +/- 15-20 percent. This allows us to arrive at the final quote estimate.

Why do I need to know the weight?

The weight of your household goods is the single most important factor in determining the cost of your move. In general, most people have no idea how much all of their belongings weigh. If you get no other value out of this calculator, just inventorying your household goods and providing you with a weight provides you with immediate knowledge that will help with your move.

Why do I need to know the cubic feet?

The cubic feet is especially helpful to know if you are getting quotes because it helps with knowing what size of truck, pod, or storage units you will need in order to be able to hold all of your belongings. If you have a long distance move or a move that is going to happen over several days/weeks then this can be very important information to know. Even if you are just looking to store some of your household goods, you could use this calculator to calculate the appropriate size of the storage unit/pod.

How can I share this information with others?

While we make it easy for you to be able to retireve your quotes by storing your answers in your browser, we know that you may want to share this report with friends, family, or even potential moving companies. To make this easier you can generate an Excel version of the report and download it. There are no strings attached, just a free and shareable report to help make it easier for you to move. If you have completed all of the steps then a download button will show below this text for you to get your report. The download button also shows above this section of questions.
